By Dana Schuster. On Monday, the year-old successful personal trainer is ditching New York City — and all his designer goods — to become a shaman in Peru. There, he will specialize in ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic brew made from a South American vine that the Amazonians believe, when consumed, offers spiritual revelations.
I drank the vile-tasting brew and sat back down. For the next five hours, Hartzog vomited and suffered intense diarrhea common side effects of the drugand hung on tight as thousands of seemingly random images sprinted through his brain.
Over the course of the week, Hartzog vacillated between major breakthroughs once, he saw himself in a past life as a World War I soldier and hours where he was floor-bound, ill.
He decided to move to Peru full time after a three-month stint in the country earlier this year. Hartzog attacked another high school student, whom he said he did not know prior to the incident. There were a lot of other politics involved. His grandfather was a senator; his family grew up in law enforcement. So I kind of got the wrong end of the deal. He bounced around various facilities, including the Clinton Correctional Facility, from which two inmates escaped last month.
Sink or swim … Your adrenal glands are burnt out. Hartzog says the conditions were abysmal. The corrections officers would spit in his food and force him to eat it, a fellow inmate stabbed him, and roaches and rats ran rampant. I was a kid [when I got arrested]. So I had to pretend to be an adult.
He received a degree in occupational sciences from the Swedish Institute and became a licensed massage therapist. But despite his achievements and closet full of name-brand loot, something was missing. He hopes to be able to guide others to spiritual enlightenment through his work at the Peruvian retreat.

Clear keys input element. As the use of ayahuasca continues to spread around the world, with ceremonies happening in nearly every city of every country, the tradition of plant spirit medicine continues to be a mysterious and often misunderstood science of indigenous wisdom and medical practice. Unfortunately, due to a general lack of proper education and understanding of this sacred science, some people think that ayahuasca is a magical medicine that cures everything.
In reality, ayahuasca can only heal a few types of illnesses. It is magical, though, due to its ability to expand perceptive abilities and conscious awareness, and plays an important role in a complex and elaborate tradition of healing with plants. Outlined below are seven components to receiving treatment in the Amazonian healing tradition of curanderismo. Ayahuasca ceremonies are just one of these components. Depending on the illness, the other six components are often more important than the use of ayahuasca.
These seven parts work together to heal patients of their illnesses and bring about health on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. There are other components within the treatment process, like inhalants, poultices, perfumes, pomades, massage, and smoke baths, among others, but the seven practices outlined below are considered to be the major components of the plant medicine treatment process when being treated by a curandero in the indigenous tradition.
Obviously, there are many differences in methods and styles between indigenous groups, familial traditions, and individual curanderos, so what we present is based on our own particular treatment process in a Shipibo tradition.

Sarlo, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant who arrived in the United States inhas had great professional success as the co-founder of Walden Venture Capital. He lives in an upscale San Francisco neighborhood, in a large house with an unobstructed view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
And yet something was always lacking. He had been drafted in a forced labor battalion, an experience he did not survive. He believes that he never recovered from that early loss.
Used for centuries in sacred healing traditions throughout Central and South America, ayahuasca is now gaining popularity around the world, featured in recent headlines about the habits of Silicon Valley, though N, N-Dimethyltryptamine or DMT, the active ingredient in an ayahuasca trip, is mostly illegal in the United States there are a couple of exceptions, under religious exemption.
Ayahuasca tourism is thriving, with more and more people happy to fly thousands of miles to take part in weeklong ceremonies in Peruvian jungles, or to seek out more luxurious contexts, like a four-star resort that comes complete with masseuses, pools, and state of the art fitness centers. Sarlo himself was initially skeptical. Taking ayahuasca would entail a potentially distressing night of hallucinations, and excretions of all kind, especially vomiting.
One of the most notorious aspects of an ayahuasca journey is the violent purging involved. But he still decided to head to Yelapa, a small village in Mexico, and swallow down the bitter brew. But he was scared, and sick, and swore that if he managed to come out of the hallucination, he would never go back in.
Taking Ayahuasca When You’re a Senior Citizen
The shaman told him he should try again the next night: on the Mexican Day of the Dead. Sarlo decided it was worth one more try. He drank again. Very quickly, he saw a forest covered with snow. And somehow I knew that was my father. And with my last breath, I blessed you and I promised to guard you all your life. How to make Ayahuasca
Sarlo said that afterward, something shifted. And as you get older, you get mired in habits. Indeed, Mr. Pollan, who is 64 and has written for The Timessaid he was surprised by the number of people he encountered when writing his book in their 70s and 80s expressing interest in trying psychedelics.
Scientific data on older people using ayahuasca is elusive but anecdotal evidence is growing.Erowid — A trove of more than 60, pages of information about psychoactive drugs, plants, chemicals, and technologies. Search for studies involving psilocybin, MDMA or other substances. The Usona Institute is sponsoring multi-site trials of psilocybin as a treatment for major depressive disorder. Find more information here. While I cannot recommend therapists or guides, you may find your way into these communities through meetup groups, holotropic breathwork practitioners and by attending conferences organized by MAPS and similar organizations.
Many therapists can help you to process or integrate past psychedelic experiences. MAPS has a good list here. And Psychedelics Today has published useful and thoughtful advice for those seeking psychedelic guides, substances and therapy.
A number of legal psychedelic retreats are held across the world each year. This information is not an endorsement; we urge you to do your own research! In recent years, ketamine—a legal anesthetic that can cause hallucinatory experiences—has shown promise as a treatment for depression. Large-scale studies of its effectiveness have not yet been published, but a number of clinics and therapists are using ketamine to treat depression, both in conjunction with psychotherapy or on its own.
There are also more than psychedelic societies and groups in the U. A psychedelic society is a local group that meets regularly to provide peer education about the psychedelic experience. Psychedelics may be currently illegal in most places but talking about them openly is not. Psychedelic societies vary widely in format based on community needs and desires. They may host documentary viewings, book clubs, visiting speakers, group discussions, or more.
Meetings may be large or relatively small, held frequently or only on special occasions. Typically, events tend towards the topical, exploring some aspect of science, history, therapeutic value, or culture surrounding psychedelics. They are community groups convened to fill a lacuna in society at large: a public place to discuss and share information about psychedelics. Many societies incorporate storytelling into their meetings to reduce stigma surrounding psychedelic use and to share wisdom. This group is for anyone interested in learning, sharing and discussing Ayahuasca and related indigenous rituals for personal growth and healing.
Ayahuasca: What is Ayahuasca? Both plants can be found in the Amazon rainforest. Chacruna contains a substance called dimethyltryptamine or DMT. To create Ayahuasca tea, the two plants are combined and boiled over a fire for many hours.

They are made in a very sacred and labour intensive process, and consist of various Amazonian medicinal plants, trees, leaves, seeds, and other sacred ingredients. Traditionally, they are applied by using a pipe made from bamboo or bone, which is blown through each nostril on both sides. Generally, they have the following effects — profoundly helps to re-align and open all your chakras, improves your grounding, releases any sickness on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels, opens-up the third eye, de-calcifies the pineal gland, clears any mental confusion, releases any negative thoughts, removes any entities, connects you to your divine breath, and elevates your connection with Spirit.
Please note that you may experience purging, vomiting, bowel movements and excess saliva, which is normal where stuck energy, toxins and sickness are being released from your energetic and physical bodies. Kambo: Kambo is a medicine that comes from frog secretion, and for many indigenous cultures in the Amazon, this purgative, immunity-boosting medicine is very important. A practitioner can help guide you to gain the maximum benefits from a kambo application, helping you to set an intention before the ceremony, ensure proper set and setting during the ceremony, and integrate the experience afterward.
Benefits of Kambo Research conducted since the s has shown the chemical makeup of kambo to contain short chains of amino acids, known as peptides, that affect gastrointestinal muscles and blood circulation as well as stimulate the adrenal cortex and pituitary gland in the brain. The venom is then administered to a person via small holes that are burned into the top few layers of their skin, usually on the arm. Because of its purging and cleansing properties, kambo is often used as a precursor to an ayahuasca ceremony, which is also used by many of the same tribes.
Undertaking a kambo ceremony can be an intense experience, but leaves you feeling relaxed after about an hour. Peyote: Peyote has a long history of use as a medicinal and sacramental herb.
Prehistoric trade in and knowledge of the sacred cactus was apparently well established prior to the European conquest of Mexico. At that time, Spanish Inquisitors declared its use to be a punishable crime against God. Ironically, native peyotists, relying on the humble cactus for divine guidance and inspiration, became targets of oftentimes ruthless evangelism. Peyote Lophophora williamsii is a small less than 12 cm in diameterround cactus with fuzzy tufts instead of spines.
It rarely rises more than an inch or so above the soil surface.
